El Tesoro Extra Añejo 85th Anniversary is a limited edition release from La Alteña Distillery in the Jalisco Highlands, commemorating 85 years of continuous production on the same site where Don Felipe Camarena founded the distillery in 1937. La Alteña operates under the direction of third-generation Master Distiller Carlos Camarena, who maintains the estate's traditional tahona stone-crushing process and commitment to agave-forward production across the entire El Tesoro range. The 85th Anniversary expression represents a formal collaboration between two legacy American spirits families — Camarena and Jim Beam Master Distiller Fred Noe — whose shared ownership under Beam Suntory created the conditions for an exchange of casks between two of the company's most historically significant production sites.

For this release, a collection of Booker's 30th Anniversary Bourbon barrels — casks that had previously held barrel-proof Kentucky bourbon for up to sixteen years — were sourced from the James B. Beam Distilling Co. and filled with El Tesoro blanco tequila at La Alteña. The spirit then aged in those barrels for a full 36 months in Mexico, qualifying as extra añejo under NOM regulations while drawing from wood already carrying sixteen years of concentrated bourbon character. Each barrel was held until it reached peak maturity before being tapped — a selective bottling approach that introduces quality variance across the batch by design rather than standardizing the result through blending. The finished spirit is bottled at 42.5% ABV.

The nose opens with cooked agave and dark cherry alongside seasoned oak, leather, molasses, and vanilla — a complex aromatic convergence of Highland agave character and deep bourbon-seasoned wood. On the palate, the expression moves through licorice, blackberry, toasted oak, and banana, with tobacco, coffee, and warm spice building through the mid-palate in layers that reflect the accumulated influence of three years in barrels carrying sixteen years of prior history. The finish is long and creamy, closing on sweet spice and a lingering warmth that honors both the tequila tradition of La Alteña and the bourbon legacy embedded in the wood that shaped it.
