Frank August Case Study: 06 Legacy Reserve 6 Barrel Batch Bourbon Whiskey. Frank August, Lexington, Kentucky — the sixth installment of the experimental Case Study series, a small batch Kentucky straight bourbon blended from six hand-selected barrels and bottled at 109.2 proof, delivering baking spice, toasted sugar, and charred oak on the nose with vanilla bean, buttercream, and nutmeg on the palate and a long, elegant finish of toasted orange peel, charred maple, and lingering caramelized sugar.
"Legacy Reserve" positions Case Study: 06 as a bridge expression in the Frank August Case Study series: not as radical a departure as the Mizunara finishing (01), the PX brandy casks (02), or the 4X Oaked proofed-in-barrel program (04), but an evolution of the core bourbon identity — six barrels chosen specifically for the depth, balance, and complexity that the Legacy Reserve designation implies. The 6-barrel batch is larger than the 3-barrel Case Study: 03 but still limited enough to maintain the precision and traceability that Case Study releases demand.
Bottled at 109.2 proof (54.6% ABV) — higher than the 100-proof Small Batch but lower than the cask strength single barrel program — the Legacy Reserve finds a sweet spot between full expression and broad accessibility. The higher proof preserves the complexity and oak depth that the 6-barrel selection achieves; the controlled proof level means it doesn't require dilution to appreciate fully, unlike cask strength expressions that benefit from water addition.
