FUJI Single Grain Japanese Whisky is a single grain whisky produced at the Kirin Company's Mt. Fuji Distillery in Gotemba — located just 7.5 miles from Mt. Fuji's peak at 620 meters elevation, using snowmelt water from Mt. Fuji that has been naturally filtered through volcanic rock over an estimated 50 years, incorporating Scottish, American, and Canadian grain whisky production influences into a distinctly Japanese expression at 46% ABV.
Gotemba is one of Japan's cooler and higher-altitude whisky distillery locations — the elevation and climate produce a slower, more gentle maturation than lowland Japanese distilleries like Yamazaki or Chita. The Mt. Fuji snowmelt water, drawn from aquifers fed by precipitation that infiltrated the mountain's volcanic soil decades ago, has a mineral softness from the 50-year filtration journey through Fuji's geology. Kirin's distillery uses a combination of pot stills, column stills, and different grain types influenced by multiple whisky-producing traditions — the resulting single grain has more complexity than standard column-still grain whisky, with poached pear, rustic fruit, and cognac-like aromatic notes on the nose, and an orange marmalade, raspberry, and rye spice character on the palate, closing with incense wood — a characteristic that hints at Japan's Mizunara oak tradition.
