Kilchoman Machir Bay is the core flagship expression from Kilchoman Distillery on Islay — one of Scotland's newest and smallest distilleries, farm-distilled on the west coast of Islay since 2005, producing a heavily peated Islay single malt named after the beach adjacent to the distillery.

Kilchoman is farm-based — one of the few Scotch distilleries that still grows its own barley, malts on-site, and controls production from grain to bottle. The Machir Bay is a no-age-statement expression assembled from ex-bourbon and Oloroso sherry casks, typically drawing from spirit 5-7 years old, presenting a young, vibrant, and intensely peated Islay character that reflects the distillery's coastal location and in-house production philosophy. Frequently Asked Questions

Is Kilchoman truly a farm distillery?

Yes — Kilchoman grows its own Optic barley on the surrounding farm, malts it in on-site floor maltings, peat-dries it to approximately 20 PPM, distils, matures, and bottles all on the same Islay farm. This level of agricultural integration is unique in modern Scotch whisky production.

How peated is Kilchoman Machir Bay?

Approximately 20 PPM from the on-site malting — in the moderate Islay range, less intense than Ardbeg (55 PPM) or Laphroaig (50 PPM) but clearly and assertively peated. A good entry point for drinkers who want Islay smoke without the extreme phenolic intensity of the southernmost Kildalton distilleries.
