Maker’s Mark 46

Introduced in 2010, Maker’s Mark 46 was the first major new expression from the distillery since its founding release in 1958. Created by Bill Samuels Jr., son of the founders, it represents a bold twist on the classic Maker’s Mark recipe.

The process begins with fully matured Maker’s Mark bourbon. Ten specially seared French oak staves (Stave Profile No. 46) are inserted into the barrel, and the whiskey is finished in the distillery’s limestone cellar. This unique method imparts deeper, richer flavors while maintaining Maker’s Mark’s signature smoothness.

Tasting Notes

  • Nose: Toasty French oak, caramel, vanilla, and baking spices.
  • Palate: Mildly sweet, layered with rich notes of vanilla, caramel, and spice, balanced by oak.
  • Finish: Velvety, long, and subtly spiced.
  • Proof: 94 (47% ABV).

Key Features

  • Mashbill: 70% corn, 16% soft winter wheat, 14% malted barley
  • Age: ~6 years (plus stave finishing)
  • Innovation: First Maker’s Mark bourbon finished with French oak staves.
  • Name Origin: “46” refers to the stave profile developed by Independent Stave Company.

Why It’s Special

  • Flavor Innovation: The French oak stave finishing adds bold spice and depth without bitterness.
  • Heritage: Maker’s Mark 46 was the brand’s first new permanent release in over 50 years.
  • Versatility: Excellent neat, on the rocks, or as a base for elevated cocktails like the Manhattan or Old Fashioned.
