History
Michter's 10 Year Rye 2023 is created with tradition in mind at the Michter's Distillery in Kentucky, Louisville. It was developed in pursuit of Michter’s goal of making the greatest American whiskey. In the 18th century, a Swiss Mennonite farmer named John Shenk settled his family near Pennsylvania's Blue Mountain Valley. After years of hard work, Shenk began distilling excess grains into whiskey, leading to the establishment of the United States' first distilling company, named Michter's. Over the years, Michter's has perfected its craft through innovation, including experimenting with different barrel finishes. This particular expression is a barrel strength bourbon aged in a second custom barrel made from 24-month air-dried wood, resulting in a rich and flavorful spirit. The rye whiskey is crafted from a mash of fresh rye grains, which are sheared to maximize flavor during fermentation. After distillation in a copper pot still, it matures in charred American oak barrels, resting in a heat-cycled warehouse that enhances interaction between the whiskey and wood, imparting complex notes of marmalade and caramel.
