Plantation Original Dark Rum. Cognac Ferrand / Maison Ferrand, Barbados & Jamaica — a two-island blend combining young Barbadian column and pot still rum aged in charred American oak with high-ester Jamaican John Dore pot still rum aged up to 15 years, double-aged through the Plantation house process in French cognac casks, and married in a wooden vat at Chateau de Bonbonnet before bottling.
The Original Dark is the flagship dark rum in Plantation's "Bar Classics" range — the everyday mixer and cocktail workhorse designed to deliver genuine character at an accessible price. The production process follows the Plantation double-aging philosophy: first, young Barbadian rums (1–3 years) distilled in both twin column and pot stills are matured in heavily charred American oak barrels in the Caribbean tropical climate, where the heat and humidity accelerate extraction. These are then shipped to Cognac Ferrand's cellars and aged a second time in medium-toasted French oak casks previously used for cognac.
A selection of these double-aged Barbados casks is then blended with a smaller volume of high-ester Jamaican pot still rum aged 10–15 years — distilled in John Dore pot stills for significant ester and fruit development. The blend is further married in a wooden vat for 3–6 months in Cognac before bottling. The result is a dark rum with more genuine complexity than its price suggests: the Barbados base provides clean tropical fruit, the Jamaican component adds funky ester depth, and the cognac cask influence adds spice and a dried fruit dimension.
