Located along the Ohi River, flowing to the Pacific Ocean from Japan's southern Alps; the town of Shimada once prospered as one of the lodging towns of the fifty-three post stations of the Tokaido. The Ohi River was famous for its difficulty to go through because bridges and boats were banned in the Edo period. Many travelers were not able to cross the river during heavy rains. The original Wakatake Onikoroshi is historically famous for having comforted many weary travelers crossing the Ohi River. Although there were several breweries in the Shimada at that time, due to its good- quality water, only Ohmuraya remains now.
